Welcome to the Africa Specialty Group (ASG) of the Association of American Geographers. The mission of the ASG is to enhance geographic research and scholarship on matters relating to Africa by encouraging effective communication of knowledge and information, and supporting innovative approaches to geographic education on Africa. Membership of the ASG is open to all individuals with interest in African scholarship, regardless of one's citizenship. Our current membership spans a wide spectrum: from development practitioners to academics; from seasoned professors to up and coming researchers and students; from theorists to practitioners; from Africans abroad and those at home to dozens of non-African natives.
From its humble beginnings decades ago, the ASG has grown into one of the most vibrant specialty groups of the AAG. It is refreshing to see more and more African geographers from the continent join us at annual AAG meetings.
In the next few years, the Board of Directors would be working on a number of initiatives, including the promotion of our journal, the African Geographical Review (AGR). We would like to see a surge in the impact factor of the journal. Also, it is our goal to forge a more sustainable relationship between Geographers with interests in Africa and African Geographers on the continent. We would also be working to increase the visibility and profile of the ASG online. The Board of Directors encourages you offer suggestions on how to move these and other agenda forward. Thank you for visiting our page.
