2014 Annual Meeting CCAG Sessions

Doing geography: Teaching with webmaps in the lower division classroom

This panel will discuss the following topics: 1) the variety and features of webmap platforms and resources; and 2) ways to incorporate webmaps into lessons as instructional resources or as graded or ungraded activities. In exploring these points, panelists will offer their experiences and views of the opportunities and challenges that come with incorporating webmaps in the lower division classroom. The session will also provide ample time for audience discussion and collaboration.

World Regional Geography: Strategies for effectively teaching the World in a lower division classroom

This panel will discuss the following topics: 1) ways to structure a world regional geography course considering textbooks, region- or theme-focus, and topics; and 2) how to actively engage students in innovative ways, such as using technology, active-learning or other means. In exploring these points, panelists will share their own World Regional Geography experiences and offer strategies based on successes in their lower division classroom. The session will also provide ample time for audience discussion and collaboration.

Geography and Service Learning: Engaging values and people in the lower division classroom

This panel will discuss the following topics: 1) ways that service learning can be integrated into the lower division geography classroom; and 2) best practices for planning, implementing and executing a service learning activity. In exploring these points, panelists will share their own service-learning experiences and offer strategies based on those experiences in the lower division classroom. The session will also provide ample time for audience discussion and collaboration.

Geography and Social Media: Engaging lower division geography students in the virtual field

This panel will discuss the following topics: 1) the variety of social media tools and applications for instruction; and 2) the management of social media activities to ensure student accountability, exemplary conduct, efficient evaluation and grading. In exploring these points, panelists will provide their own experiences and offer best practices for introducing social media into their lower division classrooms. The session will also provide ample time for audience discussion and collaboration.
