Acclaimed broadcast meteorologist and filmmaker Tom Skilling will be the 2015 AAG Climate Specialty Group Invited Speaker
Tom Skilling is the chief meteorologist for Chicago’s WGN TV. After beginning his career at age 14, Skilling has emerged as one of the nation’s most respected and familiar voices in weather broadcasting. Acclaimed elements of his program include state-of-the-art technology and animation, forecast accuracy, and in-depth reporting. Beyond WGN TV, Skilling and his staff provide content for the Chicago Tribune newspaper, WGN radio, and a wide range of online forums. Special television programs created by Skilling over his career include “Ten Inches of Partly Sunny” and “Alaska: Where Winters Are Really Winters.”

Skilling’s documentary films have received accolades ranging from Emmy Awards (for “The Sears Tower Versus Mother Nature”) and nominations (for “Tsunamis on American Shores”) to environmental reporting recognition from the Audubon Society. His documentaries “It Sounded Like a Freight Train” (on tornado science) and “When Lightning Strikes” have been widely adopted for use in educational and public awareness efforts.

In recent years Skilling has partnered with eminent climate scientist Don Wuebbles of the University of Illinois-Champaign to improve public education and communication surrounding climate change. In this capacity Skilling has been an invited contributor to panels and discussions led by leading scholars and activists across the globe. A passionate follower of weather and climate research, Skilling enthusiastically shares with audiences the evolution of his personal views regarding human influence on climate as shaped by his experience in operational meteorology.

Skilling was trained in meteorology and journalism at the University of Wisconsin and holds honorary doctorates from Lewis University (Illinois) and St. Mary's University (Minnesota). Attendees of the 2015 AAG Annual Meeting are welcome to come to his featured address hosted by the Climate Specialty Group, encouraged to attend the CSG sponsored session organized by Dr. Dan Bedford and Dr. John Harrington on climate literacy and education where Tom Skilling will serve as a panel member, and invited to tune into his dependable and entertaining weather forecasts each night on WGN TV.
