Each month, we'll feature at least one GeoMentor volunteer, learning a bit more about them to continue to build the GeoMentor community and show the talent and enthusiasm available to assist K-12 schools with GIS and geography applications in their classrooms.  If you are interested in being featured, please contact  geomentors@aag.org.  This month's GeoMentor Spotlight is Allison Hunt from duPont Manual High School and the University of Louisville!

Name:
Allison Hunt

Position/Affiliation: AP Human Geography Teacher at duPont Manual High School and Curriculum & Instruction PhD student at the University of Louisville

What was your favorite class in K-12?: Anthropology, unfortunately geography wasn't offered at my school.

How did you first learn about and/or use GIS?: I didn't realize it was GIS at the time, but in my first career as an Investment Representative we used GIS software to explore and analyze demographic information for our office locations.

Name one thing you love about GIS and/or geography (I know, just one!): I love that it is the most relevant course I can teach to my high school students and that geography is all around. Geographic literacy will benefit them regardless of what they choose to do in life.

Why did you want to volunteer as a GeoMentor?:
To show others that, although it is a complex tool, there are simple ways it can be used to enhance geographic analysis.

What kind of GeoMentor volunteer opportunity and experience are you looking for?: I'm looking to help others find ways to utilize GIS as a tool with their own student instruction.

If someone asked you why they should learn about GIS and/or geography, how would you respond in one sentence?:  All problems we face are, at their root, geographic problems - from where to lay fiber optic cables to how to minimize our environmental impact to ethnic conflicts; a firm base in geographic literacy will result in more effective solutions to the issues we currently face and will face in the future.
