Call for Papers: 2015 AAG Conference, Chicago

Session Title: Sense of Place and Place Geographies

We seek participants in a series of paper sessions at the 2015 AAG meetings to explore current and emerging research in the realm of sense of place and place geographies.  Broadly speaking, sense of place studies (or "place geographies") are those that seek to uncover the experiential feelings of identity, familiarity, and attachment among people within a locale that contribute to a recognizable place character and personality.  Our aim is to bring together scholars studying real places, their historical and/or contemporary personalities, and the actors that contribute to the construction of such personalities.   We hope to include papers that describe specific unique or mundane places, papers that interrogate methodological approaches, and papers that discuss the contribution of such work within the broader discipline.  Potential paper topics may include:

    • Everyday experiential senses of place
    • Sense of place through the lens of popular media
    • Unique identities constructed through human interaction with place
    • Historical geographies of place
    • Methodologies (including mixed-methodologies or qualitative GIS approaches) and "datasets" used to reveal a sense of place
    • The influence and voice of the researcher
    • Publishing experiences and strategies for descriptive research
    • Broader implications for sense of place research (e.g,. answering the so what question for students, dissertation or tenure committees, etc.)
    • Cross over to popular audiences

The session is sponsored by the Cultural Geography Specialty Group.  Anyone interested in participating should contact session organizers RJ Rowley (rjrowley@ilstu.edu) or Stephanie Willis (AbramRae@ku.edu).
