    Call for Papers

This call for papers brings together practitioners of active learning, including team based learning, problem-based learning and inquiry-based learning to discuss the challenges and rewards of active learning in the classroom, the institution, and the discipline. Contact: Caitie Finlayson cfinlay@umw.edu or Amanda Rees rees_amanda@columbusstate.edu with further questions and proposals.

    Description

Active learning processes engage students in discussion, reading, writing, or problem solving to enable analysis, synthesis, and evaluation (Center for Research on Learning & Teaching n.d.). Approaches to active learning include cooperative learning, problem-based learning, team-based learning, simulations and case studies. How have these shifting pedagogies influenced geography instruction in higher education? We invite papers on the following four issues:
Implementation - institutional and instructional challenges and faculty competencies
Expectations - shifting expectations for learners and instructors
Outcomes - measuring student benefits and competencies
Reflections - framing and reflecting on active learning practices and the role of active learning in geography

Eric Fournier, Professor of Geography at Samford University, will serve as the discussant for this session. Dr. Fournier has won numerous teaching awards including the 2014 Alabama Professor of the Year from the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and the 2011 Excellence in Teaching Award from the Southeastern Division of the Association of American Geographers.

This session is sponsored by the Geography Education Specialty Group
