Sea Change: Navigating transformations in coastal and marine social-ecological systems

    Last minute Call for Participation:
We welcome papers from participants across a wide range of backgrounds, career stages and sub-disciplines. The session aims to create a safe space to share experiences, build relationships, and support the further development of a community of participatory practice working to navigate coastal and marine transformations and develop place-based, interconnected, and equitable policy and management options. Key themes include but are not limited to: participatory processes; collaborative research; co-learning; indigenous rights; social-ecological systems; ethics of care; ocean; coast; sea

    Description:
Coastal and marine decision makers face a range of urgent and complex problems today. These challenges are exacerbated by fragmented legislative regimes and institutions that cannot account for cross-scale interactions; chronic data scarcity and high levels of uncertainty that make system-based assessments and predictions challenging; and often conflicting societal and economic expectations, values, and rights that are poorly integrated into management decision making. The backdrop of climate change and political unrest that overarches many coastal and marine areas complicates these issues further.

This session will explore how participatory initiatives might be transformative, mobilized and deployed to transition holistic ideas into new generations of principles, policies and practices. Particular emphasis will be placed on decolonizing methodologies. The challenge is to crack open existing divisions of knowledge, governance and administration, and build a new infrastructure of initiatives directed to working and living differently and inclusively.

Please get in touch ASAP if you wish to be included!
