  • Call to Educators: Teachers Needed to Develop Open Source Classroom Modules

Fellow GeoMentor Shawn Goulet is developing the TeachOSM for High School project and looking for teachers interested in creating classroom modules. For more information see the program description below. If you are interested in participating contact Shawn at shawn.goulet@gmail.com

             TeachOSM for High School

    Project Summary
The TeachOSM for High School project will provide educators with scale-able OpenStreetMap (OSM) geography-based educational modules developed to integrate with the United States AP Human Geography curriculum.  This project will provide an organized, easy-to-implement format for educators to expose students to an important open source 21st century mapping technology.

Once completed, these resources will be made available on the TeachOSM site, free of charge in a web-based fashion for use by anyone and will be continually updated by contributors.

Long-term, it is the intent of this project that an increase in exposure to and contributions from a younger demographic will result in many benefits including

    • an increase in sustained OSM contributors

    • greater accuracy of contributions and

    • innovation within and around the OSM project.

    Call for Educators
The project is currently being developed by TeachOSM community contributors.  We need interested educators to get involved in the development of the modules to provide feedback, suggestions, content and eventually pilot modules in their classrooms.  The TeachOSM community is fully committed to supporting educators who are interested in integrating OSM in their classrooms with their students.

  • GeoMentors in Utah help with Science Olympiad

GeoMentor Sam & his co-workers Stacie & Tyler ran the Road Scholar (map reading) event at the Utah Science Olympiad in Salt Lake City! The event tested the ability of middle school and high school students to navigate both a AAA map and a USGS quad map. Students answered 45 questions without cell phones, using only rulers, protractors, and their visual acuity to determine their answers. There were 22 teams that participated with nearly 40 students involved. Congrats to Sam & his co-workers for facilitating such a fun event!
