  • Call for Submissions - 2019 AGSG Awards

    Dear Members of the Asian Geography Specialty Group (AGSG):

    This is the first call for your submissions/nominations for the AGSG 2019 awards below, which include service awards, student paper and poster competitions, and travel awards for students. Faculty, please encourage your students to apply where relevant.

    Please note: Winners will be named via AGSG listserv, AGSG Knowledge Communities forum, and AGSG newsletter as soon as results are ready.

     Asian Geography Distinguished Service Award

    Nominations for the AGSG 2019 Distinguished Service Award are solicited from the membership.  The AGSG established the Distinguished Service Award to honor outstanding scholars in the field of Asian geography who have demonstrated notable scholarship and/or service to the specialty group or field.  Please send nominations, including a paragraph about the nominee, to AGSG Chair Dr. Jennifer Pomeroy (jpomeroy@ycp.edu) AND Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Michael Glass: glass@pitt.edu no later than February 15, 2019.

    AGSG Graduate Student Paper Competition
    The AGSG solicits submissions of single or co-authored papers with a focus on Asia. Preference will be given to papers by students only (although papers written in collaboration with faculty members are considered) and to unpublished, fully developed academic papers. Papers must not be submitted to any other specialty group paper competitions, and must not have won a prize in any previous AAG-related paper competition. The best student papers will be awarded $250. On occasion, a runner-up is selected, who receives $150. Please send submissions to AGSG Chair Dr. Jennifer Pomeroy(jpomeroy@ycp.edu) AND Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Michael Glass: glass@pitt.edu no later than February 15, 2019.

    AGSG Graduate Student Poster Competition
    The AGSG solicits submissions of single or co-authored posters with a focus on Asia. Preference will be given to papers by students only (although papers written in collaboration with faculty members are considered), and the poster must be displayed at the 2019 AAG meeting during the Asia Symposium on April 5th. The best student poster will be awarded $100. Please notify AGSG Chair Dr. Jennifer Pomeroy(jpomeroy@ycp.edu) AND Secretary-Treasurer Dr. Michael Glass: glass@pitt.edu that you will be presenting a poster no later than February 15, 2019.

    The A.K. Chakravarti Awards for Best Student Paper and Best Student Research Proposal on South Asia-(2 Awards)
    These awards were kindly established by (late) Dr. A.K. Chakravarti, Professor Emeritus, University of Saskatchewan, a noted researcher in the field of agriculture and nutrition focusing on South Asia. The awards are co-sponsored by the Asian Geography Specialty Group (AGSG) Regional Development and Planning Specialty Group (RDPSG). The Best Student Paper Award carries a $200 prize and the Best Student Research Proposal Award carries a $150 prize.

    There are no topical restrictions to the paper and proposal, but the geographic focus must be on South Asia. Manuscripts must not be more than 25 pages in length (double spaced), including references, tables and figures. The paper/proposal must be scheduled for presentation at the AAG Annual Meeting in 2019, thus the abstracts must have also been submitted to the AAG Annual Meeting by the conference registration deadline, although exceptions may be made in case of mitigating circumstances.

    Manuscripts should be fronted by a cover page comprising:

    (i)      Paper title,
    (ii)     Abstract of the paper (100 words),
    (iii)    Name(s) of the author/co-author, academic affiliation, mailing address, email address and phone number.
    (iv)    Specific award category (paper or research proposal)

    Manuscripts must be forwarded by the head or chair of the department or program, with a letter certifying that the student meets the eligibility requirements (i.e., author(s) have graduate student status, and have not submitted the same paper for other specialty group awards).

    PLEASE READ AND ADHERE TO ALL THESE REQUIREMENTS. Any departure from these will result in automatic disqualification of the paper.

    Deadline for final paper submission is February 15, 2019.  Please submit papers to AK Chakravarti Award Chair, Dr. Vandana Wadhwa (vandanaw@verizon.net), AND Co-Chair Dr. Nanda Shrestha (pokhara@yahoo.com).

    Student Travel Awards
    The AGSG provides student travel awards to facilitate and promote AAG Annual Conference attendance by students. Five $50 awards are made to students meeting eligibility criteria, which include:

     --Participation as presenter (paper/poster), panelist, or organizer at the AAG 2018 Annual Conference in Washington, DC; participation topic must relate to one or more of the Asian regions of Central Asia, East Asia, Southeast Asia, South Asia, or Southwest Asia (one award per region).
     --Student membership of the AGSG, or a pledge to join membership (student membership is only $1)

     Applications should be electronic but sent through Chair or Advisor confirming your student status, and membership of AGSG (or pledge to join AGSG). Also include confirmation of your participation at the 2018 AAG Conference, as well as a simple budget outline showing any matching funds (personal/grants/departmental support).

  • Call for Nominations to the EGSG Board

    2 November 2018

     

    Dear EGSG members:

    It is that time of the year when we plan for new elections for the AAG’s Economic Geography Specialty Group Board.

    We have vacancies for the following positions:

    Vice Chair/Treasurer (Jan 2019 - Dec 2020 subsequently serving as Chair from Jan. 2021 – Dec. 2022)

    At-large board member (two-year term: 2019 and 2020)

    At-large board member (two-year term: 2019 and 2020)

    Student representative (one-year term: 2019)

    All terms begin in January 2019.

    Please send your nominations (specifying the position) directly to me at jennifer.clark@gatech.edu by December 1, 2018.  If you are nominating someone, please make sure the individual agrees to run for election.

    We ask that all candidates send in a brief statement (100-150 words) about themselves to be included on the ballot.

  • Instructions for Requesting EGSG Sponsorship of AAG Panels 2019

    All,

    The AAG's Economic Geography Specialty Group (EGSG) is happy to sponsor relevant sessions at the upcoming AAG conference in Washington DC (April 3 - April 7, 2019).

    The AAG deadline for submitting paper abstracts is October 25, 2018 and organized sessions is November 8, 2018. Please see this link for further info on deadlines and organizing sessions: http://annualmeeting.aag.org/call_for_submissions

    Just as a reminder (or for those new to the process), acquiring EGSG session sponsorship involves requesting approval of the session and registering sponsorship online.

    A session title and summary description or the full CFP will do.  
    Please send me these requests no later than November 1, 2018.

    After we approve the request, the session organizer MUST then remember to check the box indicating EGSG sponsorship when formally registering the session via the AAG's conference site.
