Call for Papers:
While there is by now an extensive scholarly literature on environmental justice, much of this research has focused on questions of distributive justice and the unequal environmental burdens that specific marginalized groups may bear. Walker (2009) encourages researchers to move beyond ‘distribution and proximity’ to examine the complex spatialities of socioenvironmental justice. While distributive justice studies incorporating new geospatial techniques provide an increasingly sophisticated understanding of distributive issues, hazard exposure and the demographic complexities of those exposed (e.g. Collins et al., 2015) studies that probe procedural/participation and recognition justice issues also help us to deepen understandings of the historical geographical production of injustices across scales (Pulido, 2000; Schlosberg, 2007). As Walker (2009; 2012) has noted environmental justice as a frame has globalized and in the process diversified theoretically and substantively. This has produced new framings of justice and new topics of consideration including access to environmental amenities and resources. New foci of research and new approaches proliferate while many of the core original concerns remain adding to the pluralism of the field.
For this session we are seeking submissions across a broad range of topics and approaches that attend to justice issues and reflect the increasing diversity-- theoretical, methodological, and substantive—of the field. We particularly encourage papers that advance theoretical developments and those that examine to procedural and recognition justice issues in addition to distributive issues. Papers that consider Pulido, L. (2000) “Rethinking Environmental Racism: White Privilege and Urban Development in Southern California.” Annals of the Association of American Geographers. 90 (1): 12-40. the justice implications of acute events (‘natural’ disaster, technological failures, and their imbrication in complex disasters) are also sought. Lastly the environmental justice implications of energy development (e.g. hydrofracking, tar sands, oil transportation) is an emerging area that warrants increasing attention from geographers and thus we would welcome such papers.

Please submit an abstract of no more than 250 words along with title and author names to Dean Kyne (dean.kyne@utrgv.edu). Authors of accepted submissions will be informed shortly thereafter and will be required to register in order to submit their abstracts by November 16, 2015.
