Urška Demšar, PhD. Senior Lecturer, School of Geography & Sustainable Development; Co-Director of the Bell Edwards Geographic Data Institute, University of St. Andrews, Scotland, UK
Jed Long, PhD. Assistant Professor, Department of Geography & Environment, Western University, London, Ontario, Canada
Katarzyna Sila-Nowicka, PhD. Lecturer in GIScience, School of Environment, The University of Auckland, New Zealand
The webinar is based on the IJGIS paper:
Demšar, U., Long, J.A., Benitez-Paez, F., Brum Bastos, V., Marion, S., Martin, G., Sekulić, S., Smolak, K., Zein, B. and Siła-Nowicka, K., 2021. Establishing the integrated science of movement: bringing together concepts and methods from animal and human movement analysis. International Journal of Geographical Information Science, pp.1-36.
The paper is freely accessible at https://doi.org/10.1080/13658816.2021.1880589
The authors will outline the movement ecology paradigm and how it can be used to study both human and wildlife movement analysis. Next, we highlight key thematic areas of similarity (or difference) between wildlife and human applications. We discuss emerging areas of research, from a methodological standpoint, likely to be relevant moving forward. We will close by posing three "big questions" for participants to discuss and respond to encourage lively debate on this active area of research in GIScience.
