You are warmly invited to join one of the forthcoming free monthly webinars in the Regional Studies Association's ever-popular Professional Development Webinar Series.
The Professional Development Webinar series runs monthly and offers training and support for skills, knowledge and professional development on a variety of topics. Registration is free and RSA members can access both previous and future sessions as recordings on the RSA Lounge.
You can look forward to the following session, which takes place Wednesday 6th September and is free to attend live:
6th September 2023 – time 1pm UYT / 5pm BST / 6pm CEST – Research Methods: Using Patent Data from USPTO to Study Collaboration Networks. Applications for Research in Latin American Countries
This free webinar Pablo Galaso, University of the Republic, Uruguay aims to introduce participants to the advantages of using USPTO patent data for research on collaboration networks in cities and regions of developing countries, especially in Latin America. In such regions, the scarcity of sub-nationally comparable data and the absence of a regional office that centralizes patents from different countries make the use of USPTO data particularly interesting. The webinar will present the main features of this data source, the advantages of accessing it through the PatentsView platform and some examples of research articles using this data.
The webinar will serve as an introduction to the workshop to be held the following week. In this workshop, participants will be able to learn more in depth about the applications and methods that use this data and will practice how to use R for processing and analysis of collaboration networks.
This session will be chaired by Andrea Belmartino, Gran Sasso Science Institute, Italy. The session will be 30 minutes and have an opportunity for Q&A at the end.
Pablo Galaso and Andrea Belmartino along with Sergio Palomeque are the co-ordinators of the Research Network "Knowledge, Innovation and Regional Development in South America (KIRDSA)" of the Regional Studies Association.
There will be two more sessions on Research Methods:
18th October 2023: 10.00 am BST / 11.00 am CEST – Research Methods: Managing international multidisciplinary research projects
6th December 2023: 13.00 GMT / 14.00 CET – Research Methods: New Forms of Data
